Graft rejection

Rejection of foreign tissue grafts is the result of a complex immunologic response to cell surface antigens of the graft. These antigens are termed histocompatibility antigens. They are present on the surface of cells in the donor organ.

The histocompatibility genes that code for the histocompatibility antigens are referred to as the HLA (human lymphocyte antigen) complex. Among the histocompatibility genes is a set that codes for particularly strong antigens. This set of genes is known as the major histocompatibility complex (MHC).

Remember, there are two categories of antigens that are products of the MHC gene complex, Class I and Class II antigens.

Class I antigens are glycoproteins present on the surface of all cells, with the exception of red blood cells. They are involved in the activation of cytotoxic T cells (CTLs).

Class II antigens are situated on the surface of antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells, monocytes, macrophages, and B cells. These antigens are involved in the stimulation of a certain type of lymphocyte, the T-helper lymphocytes.
